Shire continuing to monitor mosquito activity

The Shire of Ashburton is continuing to monitor mosquitoes following reports of increased activity across all our towns.

In Onslow our Environmental Health team have been undertaking mosquito surveillance and treatment at a number of key locations that included Third Avenue, Onslow Sun Chalets, Ocean View Caravan Park, Beadon Creek Road, Onslow Aquatic Centre and Ankatell Court.

The next scheduled trapping and treatment will occur from 25 – 28 May 2021.

In addition, all town drains and areas found to be holding water have been treated to work across all four larvae instar stages.

This treatment will be is undertaken every 3-4 weeks for optimum results. Both treatments will continue until such time as we see a reduction in larvae and trap numbers.

We would also like to advise Onslow residents that we will implement fogging from Thursday 27 May, at dusk and dawn for a period of 10 days subject to favourable weather conditions.

  • The street fogging chemical is Aqua-K-Othrine, which is a non-residual pyrethroid insecticide (phenothrin) similar to most fly sprays. It can kill any insect that flies through the fog but has no residual effect and has low toxicity to humans, birds, and most mammals.
  • However, it can be toxic to cats, reptiles and aquatic organisms and humans should take the precaution of avoiding direct exposure to the fog where possible, keeping their cats indoors and covering outdoor fishponds during fogging.
  • Beekeepers with hives in residential areas are requested to notify the location of their hives by emailing [email protected]
  • The Shire will compile a list of opt-out locations so that the fogging machine can be switched off within 100m upwind of these areas. Any community members who wish to opt-out of the street fogging are also requested to notify their address to the same email.
  • After this time, we will continue in accordance with our mosquito management plan and act accordingly.

Residents are advised that while initial fogging will kill biting midge, commonly referred to as sand flies, as the fog settles a short time after biting midge will return in large numbers.

In Tom Price and Paraburdoo we are continuing our sentinel chicken surveillance program and regular larviciding to reduce mosquito breeding areas.
