Pannawonica Library has found a new home within the Maya Mayu Centre thanks to community partners Rio Tinto and Sodexo.

The Shire of Ashburton has been working with Rio Tinto on a new location for the library since late last year when the existing library building on Pannawonica Drive fell into disuse.

The new library location is situated within the building at 70 Deepdale Drive and will be home to the Shire’s library officers and community development staff, as well as Rio Tinto and Sodexo employees.

Shire President Kerry White said she was delighted with the collaborative effort to reinstate an important community resource.

“Thanks to the generosity of our valued community partners Rio Tinto and Sodexo we were able to re-establish our library services with diminished disruption,” said Councillor White.

“The spacious new library has a capacity for 48, making it an ideal venue for hosting community programs and events.

“The library remains a touchstone of connection, stimulation and education, particularly in remote towns such as Pannawonica. Our outstanding library staff offer programs that enrich the lives of our community members, including the routinely well-attended ‘Story Time’, which allows parents the opportunity to form support systems with other parents and children the chance to develop socially and intellectually.

“The sharing of facilities within the Maya Mayu Centre will result in greater interaction and strengthening of existing bonds between the Shire and valued community partners Rio Tinto and Sodexo.”

Josh Bennett, Rio Tinto General Manager, Robe Valley said that they are pleased that we have been able to find an alternate location for the library facility to reopen in Pannawonica.

“The benefits of reading and interpersonal connection for children can’t be understated, as well as the friendships and sense of community that form from the children and parents using the facility. It is great to have things back up and running again”.
