The Shire of Ashburton will be hosting NAIDOC Sundowner events in Tom Price and Paraburdoo as part of community NAIDOC week celebrations.

This year, the official theme of NAIDOC Week is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’ encouraging a relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non‑Indigenous Australians based on justice, equity, and recognition of rights.

In Tom Price, events will include a NAIDOC Sundowner at the Village Green on Friday 8 July, a NAIDOC themed Drive-In on Friday 22 July, and a NAIDOC Art Exhibition which will open on Friday 29 July.

Paraburdoo NAIDOC celebrations will include NAIDOC themed story time at the Library on Tuesday 5 July and Thursday 7 July, and a NAIDOC Sundowner at the Memorial Gardens at on Saturday 16 July.

Last week, the township of Onslow took part in an array of events to recognise NAIDOC week including an opening ceremony, lunch cook-up and art competition at Onslow School, Friday Night Lights, community football match, a NAIDOC movie night, and a closing ceremony at the Onslow Sports Club.

Celebrations in Pannawonica have been postponed due to a death within the community but will look to be hosted at a later date.

Shire President Kerry White said the celebrations were a great opportunity for people to come together as a community and celebrate the origins and diversity of the area.

“NAIDOC Week remains an important occasion in our events calendar,” said Councillor White.

“The Pilbara region is home to some of the oldest human civilisations on Earth, and we strive to recognise and celebrate the remarkable cultural origins of our ancient and unique area.”
