Multipurpose court upgrades in Tom Price and Paraburdoo commence August 2022

As part of a total $12M project, the undercover multipurpose courts will provide new sporting amenities to the communities of Tom Price and Paraburdoo.

The shaded courts have been initiated by active campaigns from local sports groups who have lobbied to improve sports playing conditions, recognising the harsh climate as a barrier to children's sport due to the need to play outside of sunlight hours for more than two-thirds of the year.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said that the project includes the design and construction of a modernised fit for purpose facility in both towns, with the capacity to house multiple sports groups for competitions and roadshows.

“The facilities are being delivered under our Community Infrastructure and Services Partnership between the Shire of Ashburton and Rio Tinto”, acknowledged Councillor White.

Rio Tinto’s Managing Director Port, Rail & Core Services, Richard Cohen said this exciting project was another example of the success of Rio Tinto’s and the Shire of Ashburton’s ongoing partnership to improve the lives of those living and working in the region.

“To create more vibrant and active communities it’s important we work with our community partners to invest in facilities that will provide lasting benefits.

“Sport is an important part of every community and we are delighted to deliver this state-of-the-art facility in partnership with the Shire of Ashburton to support Tom Price and Paraburdo to be an even greater place to live, work and play.”

Both facilities will consider -

  • Full engineered cover over all playing surfaces,
  • Upgraded backboards and netball rings,
  • Where necessary, new public amenities, and
  • Consideration of club rooms and canteen amenities.
