Brown Dog Tick Disease present in Ashburton

Published on Tuesday, 22 June 2021 at 4:29:22 PM

The Shire of Ashburton has been advised that dogs from Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Onslow have presented with ehrlichiosis.

These dogs have often come from properties within our town-sites and appeared to be fit and healthy with no signs of being unwell or presenting with ticks on them.

Ehrlichiosis or Brown Dog Tick Disease primarily affects dogs and is spread by the brown dog tick, traditionally found in hot and humid environments, and can result in death if not properly treated.

You can help prevent ehrlichiosis occurring by:

  • Treat your dogs for ticks regularly, as well as their bedding and the yard.
  • Talk to your vet about the tick treatment that is right for your dog.
  • Check your dogs for ticks regularly (especially around the neck, head, ears, armpits and belly) and carefully remove any ticks.

Ehrlichiosis in dogs is a notifiable disease in Australia. This means that if your dog shows any of the signs of ehrlichiosis, you must contact your vet or the Emergency Animal Disease hotline on 1800 675 888.

Call your vet as soon as your dog gets sick as early treatment provides the best chance of recovery.

Symptoms include:

  • fever
  • weakness
  • weight loss
  • unusual bleeding or bruising, including blood from nose
  • pale gums
  • runny eyes and nose.
