Upgrade works to Tom Price Visitor Information Bay will get underway next week, as the Shire of Ashburton recently appointed local construction company, Byblos Constructions, to oversee the $838,000 project.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said that she was pleased this project would get underway before the end of the financial year.

“The Shire set out on an ambitious capital works program in 2020/21 and the Tom Price Visitor Information Bay has been earmarked for improvement for a number of years”’ said Councillor White.

“As part of the Shire’s Strategic Community Plan 2017 - 2027 and identified in the Marketing and Communications Strategy 2020, Council prioritised the delivery of well managed tourism and quality infrastructure along with an enhanced visitor experience across all of our towns.

“This upgraded information bay in Tom Price will relocate to the popular pull-in area at the feature haul truck as you approach the intersection of Bingarn Road and will be an entrance statement for visitors coming from Paraburdoo and Karijini National Park and Karratha and Millstream Chichester National Park, once Red Dog Highway is completed to Tom Price.

“It will feature sheltered picnic tables, as well as revitalised visitor information signage in a dedicated safe place for drivers to pull in. The project also includes renewal of the visitor information shelter at the Karijini Drive – Tom Price Paraburdoo intersection.

“Tourism in our Shire has seen a substantial increase as we continue to navigate restricted travel and international border closures which has seen a lot more Australians holidaying at home and travelling to remote and regional areas.

“We want to continue to create vibrant towns and desired destinations so that we can continue to welcome visitors to our region and proudly showcase the magnificent landscapes and natural wonders within the Shire and broader Pilbara area.

“The project has been funded by the Shire of Ashburton, Rio Tinto Iron Ore through our Community Infrastructure and Services Partnership and Main Roads Western Australia”.
