Councillors Reinstated - Background

On 11 December 2012, the then Minister of Local Government suspended the Council for six months and appointed Ron Yuryevich as Commissioner. Mr Yuryevich has performed the functions of the Council during that time.

The suspended Shire Councillors have attended mandatory training in the roles and responsibilities of Councillors with the Department of Local Government.

The training program was coordinated with the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the WA Local Government Association, and focused on a core skills set developed by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

The program included the role and structure of local government, meeting processes, land use planning and ethical responsibilities.

The Council was suspended following a probity audit which highlighted concerns about purchasing and tendering, delegation of authority by Council to its officers, and completion of statutory returns.

The Shire, under the direction of Commissioner Ron Yuryevich has taken steps to address the concerns, meet its statutory requirements and ensure its processes reflect best practice.
