Council Policies are adopted by Council to provide governance by establishing agreements, procedures and guidelines as a plan or course of action to achieve desired outcomes.
Policies are referred to in the process of making important organisational decisions, including the identification of different alternatives or spending priorities, and choosing among them on the basis of the impact they will have.
Policies help to provide directional leadership and:
- states matters of principle
- is focused on action, stating what is to be done and by whom
- is an authoritative statement, made by a person or body with power to do so.
Policies represent the values that Council holds and offer guidance for staff and Councillors in the decision-making process. They are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure they are relevant for the corporate direction of the Council.
