Residential Design Codes

The purpose of the Residential Design Codes (R-Codes) is to provide a comprehensive basis for the control of residential development and outline the 'rules' which apply to residential development throughout Western Australia. The R-Codes do not address the physical construction requirements or internal arrangements of buildings - these matters are dealt with by the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

Any variation or deviation from the R-Codes deemed to comply requirements will require submission of a Development Application to the Shire for assessment prior to any Building permit being issued.    For details on how to lodge a Development Application please refer to how to apply link on the Shire website.

As the R-Codes are administered and applied by Local Government, all enquiries relating to specific development proposals, including the application and interpretation of provisions of the R-Codes to specific development proposals, can be directed to the Shire's Principal Town Planner on 9188 4444 or email soa@ashburton.wa.gov.au.
